Suntop Peak Lookout

Suntop Sunrise 09-2007

I went up to Suntop this morning for the sun rise and took a million pictures. Here are some of the ones I liked the best. The gate near the top was closed so I ended up having to hike up to the lookout in the dark . . . oh well but I didn't think to bring a flashlight. I surprised the forest service worker who was sleeping in the lookout. He says, he has never seen anyone up there that early. What a shame because while it was foggy and cloudy down below, as you can see from the pictures, it was absolutely beautiful up above all that.

Are there camp sites up there? You're hardcore to get up there pre sunrise.

As a long time fire watcher at Suntop I can sympathise with the guy you woke up - the gate was closed as he was asleep! I've had 'em show up at all hours - during the day is ok, but please let me finish eating my meal when you arrive! I've had to wait until dark to heat water for a shower - carry the hot water outside & pour it over your cold shivering body while the fog wraps clammily around you, then hear a car coming up! You wind up as the worlds largest goosebump & covered with soap too. I've had drunks arrive like you did to watch the sunrise, then stand outside and use the filthest language you can imagine while my wife & kid were overhearing this instead of sleeping. I've had drunk hunters show up in the middle of the night, get their car high centered then gun the engine and laugh like mad - while we were trying to sleep. In both cases I threw them off. I've been shot over up there, repaired shot out windows, plugged holes shot in the toilets, and picked up an enormus amout of litter - cigarette butts, film wrappers, cans, orange peels, and have put out vistors fires - using my own water I had to carry up from down below. So take it easy on the poor guy working there!

I said I surprised him, not that I woke him up. He was very happy to see me. The manning of fire lookouts these days is for goodwill/social reasons mostly so it seems strange that someone like yourself who doesn't seem to like people, would want to man a lookout. I guess I'm glad it wasn't you up there . . . your chosen name, "grouchyolgeeze", pretty much says it all. lol.

Do you people have a facebook fan page? I looked for one on twitter but could not discover one, I would really like to become a fan!

grouchyolgeeze is such a dork, I guess he thought the lookout was his private home not a building on public property. I do get what he is saying, I won't even sleep in my car on some summits because of he yahoos that show up in the deep of night.
